Agent or Manager? Who’s Who?

The opportunities in the entertainment industry can best be tapped into by getting represented.

Clients, Talents, Agents, Managers: who are they?

Talent agencies have agents that work in an agency on behalf of performers.

Management companies have managers that work on behalf of performers.

Talent agencies & management companies refer to their performers as

Clients & also as Talent.

Now that the name designations are clearly defined, what does being “ Represented “ translate to ?

Good representation happens by:

  • Establishing a professional relationship with someone who knows & understands the business
  • Clicking with someone who recognizes your skills & your talent
  • Engaging with someone who is approachable
  • Believing that someone sees your potential
  • Being able to work together as a team
  • Making contact with someone who will take time for you
  • Confirming an agent’s union affiliation
  • Signing with the right type of agent
  • Connecting with someone who will pitch you to help get you bookings
  • Finding someone who has the ability & desire to guide your career
  • Working with someone who promotes your brand
  • Clarifying someone’s willingness to work within your boundaries
  • Having mutual respect
  • Being accountable & professional
  • Knowing you have found someone who believes in your dream

What is the difference between an agent & a manager?

  • Agents specialize
  • Agents can have union affiliation
  • Agents promote a specific area of your career
  • Managers are broadly versed
  • Managers have no union affiliation
  • Managers develop, guide, promote & advise all aspects of your career

Agents & Managers both can submit Talent to casting directors, producers, & clients & advertisers for consideration for bookings.

Agents & Managers are both paid commissions by Talent for booking their clients.

Is it necessary to have both a manager & an agent?

Every entertainment career has a beginning and moves along at a varied pace.  Every performer has unique gifts, talents, skills, & training that distinctly separates one performer from another.

Knowledgeable Agents & Managers are an essential part of an actor’s successful career.
